IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) mandated in April 2024 that all comprehensive health insurance policies must cover bariatric surgery if medically necessary. This was a landmark change. Before 2024, most policies excluded bariatric surgery. Policies issued or renewed after April 2024 must include coverage if your BMI and health conditions meet the medical necessity criteria.
BMI of 40 kg/m2 or above, regardless of other conditions. BMI of 35 to 39.9 with at least one serious obesity-related comorbidity: Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, heart disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or severe joint disease. The decision for surgery must be made by a qualified bariatric surgeon with documentation of failed conservative treatment (diet, exercise, medication) for at least 6 months.
