What Is BXO/Lichen Sclerosus?
BXO causes the foreskin to become white, thickened, and scarred. It progressively tightens the foreskin leading to phimosis. In advanced cases it can spread to the glans and urethral meatus (opening of the urethra). Symptoms include tight foreskin, white patches, itching, pain, and difficulty urinating in severe cases. Treatment of BXO — Why Circumcision Is Essential
Steroid creams (clobetasol propionate) are the first-line treatment for mild BXO and can slow progression, reduce symptoms, and sometimes improve the condition. However steroid creams rarely cure BXO permanently and do not remove the scarred tissue. Circumcision removes the affected foreskin and is the most effective treatment for BXO affecting the foreskin.
