Before Circumcision — Preparation

Wash the area thoroughly with soap and water the morning of the procedure. Trim pubic hair if possible — this keeps the area clean and reduces infection risk. Wear clean, comfortable, loose-fitting underwear to the procedure. Avoid applying any creams or ointments unless prescribed by your doctor. Do not eat or drink for 4 hours before the procedure. Arrange comfortable loose trousers for after the procedure.

Immediately After Circumcision

A dressing will be applied by the surgeon. Keep the dressing in place until your doctor tells you to remove it (typically 24 to 48 hours). Take prescribed painkillers regularly for the first 2 to 3 days even if pain is mild — this prevents pain from building up. Wear supportive briefs or boxer briefs (not tight, but not loose boxers which provide no support).

Day 2 to 7 After Circumcision

Remove the dressing as instructed. Shower normally but keep the wound out of direct water pressure. Pat dry gently — do not rub. Apply prescribed antibiotic ointment if recommended. Take prescribed antibiotics for the full course. Normal swelling and bruising at this stage is completely expected.

Week 2 to 4 After Circumcision

For laser circumcision the wound is clean and healing by this stage. For ZSR circumcision the dissolving staples gradually fall off between days 7 and 14 — do not pull them off. Avoid tight clothing. Avoid sports and gym for 2 weeks. Avoid swimming for 3 weeks. Occasional erections are normal and do not damage the wound.

Signs of Infection to Watch For

Increased redness or swelling after day 3 (initial swelling reduces, increased swelling after day 3 is abnormal). Yellow or green discharge (clear or slightly pink discharge is normal). Fever above 38 degrees. Persistent or worsening pain after day 4.
